Testimonial from a local healthcare provider

“This is the way medicine should be practiced, without insurance companies getting in the way and driving up overhead.

I wanted you to be aware of healthcare sharing ministries, if you are not already familiar with such. I had heard of them for years but was skeptical (and fearful) of participating in that model instead of using traditional health insurance. But when Obamacare kicked in, our premiums jumped from $900 per month to over $1,700 per month, and the deductible jumped from $1,500 to $3,000. We are both healthy and usually don’t spend $3,000 per month, so it amounted to paying  over $20,000 per year for catastrophic coverage.

Obamacare gave me the incentive to dump my previous health insurance and join a Christian healthcare sharing ministry. There are 3 of them that were included somehow in the Obamacare legislation such that if you participate you are not subject to the uninsured “tax” that was ushered in with Obamacare. The one we joined is Christian Healthcare Ministries chministries.org . It has worked out quite well. We pay $300 combined per month, plus an additional $140 per year for unlimited catastrophic coverage.

We put it to the test when my wife had gall bladder surgery about 2 years ago. As a self-pay patient, our local hospital reduced the hospital bill from about $40,000 to $19,000. The other associated services/providers also discounted their part in the event. These charges were submitted to CHM for review, and we were reimbursed 100% 3 months later.

So, it seems to me this concept would dovetail into what you are doing. CHM pays for illness/incidents over $500 or $1,000, depending on the level of participation. So routine/preventive/incidental costs less than that are not covered. Your model of DPC + a sharing ministry like CHM would allow someone who is self-insured or not insured through their employer to dump their traditional insurance plan and have quality care while saving a ton of $$$.”

So, as you accept patients to your practice who are uninsured for catastrophic events, or are unhappy with paying exorbitant premiums with high deductibles, you could recommend CHM or one of the other healthcare sharing ministries as an alternative (assuming they agree to the basic Christian beliefs of the organization and are active in a local church).

I hope your DPC practice takes off and starts a revolution.”
